Explore a meandering one-mile path adorned with a plethora of pumpkin wonders, including a captivating forest of illuminated jack-o'-lanterns, all within Descanso Gardens' annual Carved event.
This fall, spanning from October 6th to 29th, Carved will transform the botanical garden into a pumpkin wonderland, featuring these vibrant gourds in various imaginative forms. Marvel at a sea monster emerging from a pond, witness dense clusters of pumpkins adorning the ground, and even encounter a house ingeniously assembled from these iconic symbols of the season.
The 2023 edition promises an exciting new route, additional enchanting locations, and an expanded Día de los Muertos ofrenda altar. Tickets for this extraordinary experience, priced between $35 and $45, will be available for purchase starting September 6th at 10 a.m.
Reflecting on last year's event, visitors were treated to two distinct zones of jack-o'-lantern artistry. One section featured an enchanting forest adorned with expressively carved (albeit artificial) pumpkins, while another offered a more open path lined with genuine pumpkins creatively designed to pay homage to beloved movies and late celebrities. For those familiar with Carved, the absence of real pumpkins in the forested area might have been surprising, but fear not, as they had been thoughtfully relocated to their dedicated section further into the immersive experience.
Frequent attendees of Descanso's holiday tradition, Enchanted, will recognize a few elements reimagined for Halloween, including the oak grove's trunk-encircling platforms now resonating with eerie cackles instead of the usual sparkling sounds. The music sets the mood with its captivating yet family-friendly moody tunes, and the installations are thoughtfully crafted, showcasing not just jack-o'-lanterns but also woven straw lanterns, glowing boxes, and a mesmerizing neon web of ropes. This creative approach adds an extra layer of enchantment to the event.
Plan to spend a minimum of 45 minutes exploring the displays, depending on the crowd and your propensity for capturing photos. Don't forget to take a break for a cup of (perhaps spiked) hot cocoa or cider in the charming courtyard. Be sure to secure timed tickets to make the most of your experience. Alternatively, if you prefer a daytime visit, you can still enjoy the decor and attractions at about half the price, although the enchanting illumination that defines Carved will be absent. Nonetheless, you can still savor the opportunity to pose in front of the pumpkin house or navigate the hay maze during a sunlit Descanso visit.
